Stone Island Size Guide

The Perfect Guide to Stone Island Sizing - Which size should you buy?

** We've created this guide because there are such vast differences in sizing across the different product ranges and seasons. **

1. General Sizing Considerations

2.  The Importance of Pit to Pit (P2P)

  • We created the below size guide to help people who are new to buying Stone Island. One of the best things to familiarise yourself with is your pit to pit measurement (P2P). This is far less subjective than the actual tagged size as it's a physical measurement. We've matched up some ideal P2P's with the 'normal t-shirt size' you take in common household brands to give you a better chance at a perfect fit. A great example would be a male that wears a large in Nike sportswear. This gives an indicative suggestion of a size XL and P2P of 23". Due to the vast differences in sizing across different seasons and collaborations, this measurement can be used independently of the garments tagged size. You may see something such as a Nike x Stone Island Membrana Jacket in a large but its 23" P2P so you know it will fit you perfectly.
  • Use the table below to give you a start, or go one step further and take a garment that fits you perfectly, lie it completely flat on the ground and measure across the armpits at the lowest point of the pit itself. If you measured a t-shirt or sweatshirt, add an inch or so on to find your ideal jacket size as you will need some space for layering.
Normal T-Shirt Size Suggested Size Pit to Pit (")
XS S 20"
S M 21"
M L 22"
L XL 23"
XL XXL 24.5"
XXL XXXL 26"

3. Stone Island Overshirts (Garment Dyed or Nylon Metal)

  • We've typically found that Garment Dyed Overshirts fit one size smaller than what you would normally wear in other brands. If in doubt, size up as most of these overshirts have button cuffs to adjust the fit and you want to be able to wear it both zipped and unzipped. A typical male that wears Large in Nike will find an XL overshirt will fit a bit better.
  • When it comes to Nylon Metal, these can vary quite a bit between the different seasons. A good rule of thumb is if the overshirt is one of the special 'colour weft' editions then you should size up. Due to the double colour construction they seem to fit an inch or so smaller.

4. Stone Island Jackets (Nylon Metal, Membrana, Micro Reps, Crinkle Reps, Soft Shell, Smocks, Pertex & Down)

For jackets as a whole, it's best to use "general sizing considerations" in point 1 due to the vast differences in fit depending on the era / particular season although some points to note below;

  • Jackets with an elasticated waistband often fit smaller. These are typically products like soft shells shown above and there are also many other jackets like micro reps, membrana and nylon metal with a similar fitted waistband. Size up on these particular styles as they are very fitted on the stomach and also fit short on the body. If you are towards 6ft and above, you will need a bigger size just for the extra length.
  • Membrana jackets often have a more generous pit to pit sizing and you may find you are better sticking to your normal size for these. The 4 pocket field parka versions of membrana are very long and have oversized pits so you may even size down on those particular models.
  • Pertex quantum jackets with shiny exteriors fit a size smaller most of the time although we have found the longer the jacket is, the bigger it seems to fit. The 3/4 length pertex quantum y down jackets fit a size bigger than normal although the shorter, lightweight models fit a size smaller.
  • One style that as a whole, fits slightly bigger would be smocks. Most smocks, be it the ghost smocks, shadow project nyco or striped nylon metal all fit one size bigger. If you like that extra baggy smock style then taking your normal size is also ok although you will normally find a size smaller gives the perfect fit.

5. Stone Island Jumpers & Sweatshirts (Wool, Cotton & Nylon)

  • Regular cotton sweatshirts and hoodies tend to fit similar to your normal household brand size. These are the ones that release every season in a variety of colours. If you like a more fitted look, take your normal size. If you like some extra room then a size up also looks great. Some people may wear a size large crewneck sweatshirt but an XL overshirt depending on their particular needs.
  • A great rule of thumb is to size up if the garment isn't cotton. Some of the wool knits fit really small as do many of the ghost sweatshirts as they are either wool or nylon. Nylon has little to no stretch and wool is an extremely tight weave. Without sizing up it can just contract against your skin.

6. Stone Island Bodywarmers / Gilets (Micro Yarn Down or Crinkle Reps NY Down)

  • Without a doubt, gilets and bodywarmers are the one item that people always get wrong. We're rarely told a gilet is too big but frequently told they fit too small. A fantastic rule of thumb is to size up for any gilet. Some of the slim line models do fit more true to size but overall, with layering kept in mind, its best to give yourself that extra room by taking a size bigger than normal, unless you like it very fitted. Also bear in mind that gilets do fit short on the body although this isn't something that people normally complain about as it's the style of garment.

7. Stone Island Jeans & Trousers (RE, RE-T, SL & SK)

  • It's much easier to find your ideal size when it comes to jeans and cargos due to the different labelled fits and cuts. Above the certilogo label on most bottoms is a small label with either RE (regular fit), RE-T (regular tapered fit) , SL (slim) or SK (skinny) written.
  • RE have a wider leg and ankle like boot cut, RE-T have a wider leg with a more snug ankle. Slim and skinny are as stated. One thing worth noting with jeans is they often fit much longer than expected so always read our descriptions for the inside leg measurement. These can be turned up or altered if required.
  • When it comes to cargo trousers, the inside leg measurement doesn't tend to matter too much due to the elasticated bottoms. Most cargos have a 32" inside leg although people above 6ft have no problem with the length of them as the overall trouser length is sufficient. S.I dont tend to produce special cargo trousers with a stated leg measurement so you will normally be selecting a waist size.
  • Waist sizes tend to fit as follows; S - (28-30"), M - (30-32"), L - (32-34"), XL - (34-36"), XXL (36-38").

8. Stone Island T-Shirts (Short or Long-Sleeve)

  • T-Shirts and Polo's often fit one size smaller although from 2020 onwards, there have been some adjustments to this range to make them more true to regular consumer sizing. Some items like polo shirts sometimes have a SL slim fit tag on the neck that identifies it will require a size up.
